Our core business has remained true to our founding belief- delivering quality education and training, advocating for and influencing education policy for underserved populations, the needy and conflict- affected communities as part of our overarching mission to create lasting change and transformation in society.

Our initiatives align with Sustainable Development Goal #4 (Quality Education) by empowering teachers to deliver inclusive education and fostering peacebuilding through education. Additionally, the organization advocates for increasing women's representation in the teaching profession and improving English language proficiency among educators

Our Impact Areas

  • 1.1 Scholarship Management

We have supported students from refugee and returnee communities by offering life-changing opportunities through access to higher education scholarships with a strong focus on gender equity and resilience. In 2024, we have partnered with UNHCR Somalia as the implementing agency for the DAFI (Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative) scholarship programme, funded by the German Government. This program supports undergraduate students across diverse fields critical to social and economic development. Our scholars are selected based on academic merit, leadership potential, and a demonstrated commitment to their communities, ensuring that higher education becomes a catalyst for long-term change and solutions to displacement.

  • Impact
  • Collaboration with 21 universities across Somalia, we supported over 300 students on scholarship, 41% of whom were female. The scholarship program included financial stipends, industrial attachments for graduates, and ongoing mentorship and guidance. Additionally, the programme supported language training through My Pitam, a flexible online platform designed to enhance students’ academic performance.

    • 1.2 Teacher Training & Continuous Professional Development

Teachers are the central actors in ensuring safe and quality learning outcome. Yet, many teachers in conflict settings have little training beyond secondary school. In Somalia, there exists few teachers in schools compared to learner needs with female teachers accounting for an absolute minority in terms of representation.
Our teacher training programmes are therefore critical areas of attention in bridging this gap. Windle has invested specialized, dedicated expertise in implementing continuous teacher training and professional development programmes using on-the-job teacher training models. This means moving away from short-term, workshop-based training to long-term programmes that provide teachers with ongoing and on-the-job training that leads to recognized certification. In partnership with Moe at FGS and FMS, we managed to provide continuous and certified training to hundreds of teachers, some of the graduate teachers in the government payroll. As a member of the Global Teacher Task Force, we are not only providing training to teachers but are dignifying and valorizing the teacher’s profession.

    • 1.3 Education Infrastructure

Despite government effort to improve this through multi-donor funds such as GPE and World-Bank, education infrastructure is often inadequate. Overcrowded classrooms, lack of teaching and learning materials, and poorly maintained facilities hinder student learning and teacher performance. Investing in resilient and inclusive infrastructure not only improves academic outcomes but also promotes safety, health, and well-being.
Windle International Somalia in partnership with the Federal Government of Somalia, managed to rehabilitate, construct 44 classrooms and latrines and supplies over 300+ desks to meet contemporary safety standards and further installed robust perimeter walls and security gates across educational facilities, establishing protective boundaries that safeguard students and staff during learning activities. These security enhancements not only addressed immediate safety concerns but also built community confidence in educational institutions operating in vulnerable contexts.

Windle Somalia is committed to expanding access to higher education for marginalized and underserved communities. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education and key partners, Windle provides scholarships to talented students who face financial barriers to pursuing tertiary education. Through targeted support for refugee youth, Windle helps unlock the potential of individuals who might otherwise be excluded from academic opportunities. The Tertiary Education Sholarship programmes offer more than just financial assistance—it includes academic advising, mentorship, and ongoing guidance to ensure students thrive in their academic journeys and are empowered to contribute meaningfully to their communities and future development.

Through the “Learn to Earn” Programme, Windle managed to skill youth and girls through soft skills training. The training was aimed to provide displaced Youth (Refugees) with valuable skills that are in demand in the job market. This includes both technical skills specific to certain industries or trades, as well as transferable skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and entrepreneurship. The program offers technical skills development for graduates who want to pursue specific careers or occupations. The participants learn various fields such as IT, hospitality, beauty and decoration, or other sectors with high demand for workers. The aim is to empower youth specially women to attain self-reliance.
